Seeking God’s Truth and Walking in His Will

1 Kings 22 & 2 Chronicles 18

In this chapter, King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah form an alliance to retake Ramoth-gilead from the Arameans. Before going to battle, Jehoshaphat insists they seek the Lord’s guidance. Ahab gathers his prophets, who unanimously predict success, but Jehoshaphat asks for a true prophet of the Lord. Micaiah is brought, and though he initially sarcastically agrees, he reveals a vision of God allowing a lying spirit to deceive Ahab’s prophets to bring judgment on him. Despite the warning, Ahab goes into battle and is killed, fulfilling God’s word. This chapter reveals the dangers of ignoring God’s true guidance and the importance of discerning His voice over the world’s false assurances.

This chapter parallels the account in 1 Kings 22 with a focus on Jehoshaphat’s perspective. It highlights his desire to follow God’s will by consulting prophets, yet it also shows the tragic consequences of Ahab’s rebellion and stubbornness. The story of Micaiah’s prophecy reveals the heavenly council and God’s control over even the plans of men. This chapter emphasizes the tension between human will and divine sovereignty, reminding us that God’s purposes prevail despite human sinfulness and deception.

From these chapters we learn the vital importance of seeking God’s truth before making decisions, especially in leadership and difficult circumstances. God’s character as sovereign and just is clear as He orchestrates events according to His perfect plan. The redemptive narrative reminds us that God’s word is trustworthy and that Jesus is the ultimate prophet who reveals God’s will fully. For our spiritual growth we must cultivate discernment to hear God’s voice, humbly submit to His guidance, and avoid the dangers of relying on worldly counsel or self-will.

Reflection Questions:

  • How do I seek and discern God’s guidance in my daily decisions?

  • What false voices or influences might I need to reject in order to hear God more clearly?

  • How does God’s sovereignty encourage me to trust His plan even when circumstances seem uncertain?

  • In what ways does Jesus fulfill the role of the true prophet and guide for our lives?

  • How can I grow in humility to submit fully to God’s will rather than my own?
