Exodus 34-36

In Exodus 34, after Israel’s sin with the golden calf, God renews His covenant with His people. Moses ascends Mount Sinai again to receive a new set of tablets with the commandments, signifying that despite their failure, God is willing to restore the relationship. The renewal of the covenant involves a reminder of God’s holiness, the need for exclusive worship, and His desire for the people’s obedience. God promises to perform marvelous works before them, which would testify to His power and faithfulness. Exodus 35 begins with a reminder of the Sabbath commandment, emphasizing the importance of rest and holiness. Moses then instructs the Israelites to bring offerings for the construction of the tabernacle, appealing to those with willing hearts. The people respond generously, giving from their resources and skills to build the dwelling place for God. The workmen chosen for the task are filled with the Spirit of God, equipping them to carry out the task with excellence. This chapter highlights the importance of obedience to God’s commands, generosity in giving, and the use of spiritual gifts for the glory of God. It shows that God desires both our hearts and our hands in service to Him.

Exodus 36 describes the actual construction of the tabernacle based on the instructions given by God. The people, moved by God’s Spirit, work diligently to create the tabernacle’s various components, including the curtains, the ark, the altar, and the lampstand. The generosity of the people in Exodus 35 continues here, as they bring more materials than are needed, demonstrating their eagerness to contribute to God’s work. This chapter shows the beautiful partnership between God’s people and His Spirit as they obey His commands and work together to bring about His dwelling among them. It emphasizes the role of both individual gifts and collective effort in fulfilling God’s purposes.

Exodus 34-36 presents a powerful picture of God’s faithfulness, the restoration of the covenant, and the obedience of the people in response. After Israel’s sin, God mercifully renews the covenant, showing that forgiveness and restoration are possible when we return to Him with humble hearts.
